With a history dating back approximately 2,000 years, it is a modern metropolis that never loses sight of its rich past. Karin Marcus T he first inhabitants to the area now known as Mesa were the Hohokam, a tribe credited with building the area’s first canal system, parts of which exist today. The 125-mile waterway is considered the most complicated canal built in the primitive New World. In the late 1800s, U.S. Army forces, clearing the way for pioneers, clashed with Apaches. A Mormon settlement arrived in 1877, followed closely by the First Mesa Company, which settled on a flat, raised piece of land—a mesa. The city was founded in 1878 and incorporated in 1883. Mesa officials continued the Hohokam’s work and began widening the Mesa Canal in 1895, in preparation for a power plant. Utilities provided a sizable cash flow for the city, with revenues paying for a hospital, town hall, and library. 28 LocumLife MAY 2010 In the 1940s, Williams Air Force Base and Falcon Field, a public airport, opened and brought an influx of military personnel—which caused a population explosion. The latter part of the 1900s saw the waning of agricultural growth and the escalation of commerce and industry. MUSEUM HIGHLIGHTS The Mesa Arizona Temple was the first temple the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints built in Arizona. Dedicated in 1927, the 114,000-squarefoot building was designed to emulate pre-Columbian temples, but with a modern twist. It has a public visitors’ center that allows guests to enjoy the grounds, which feature a cactus garden, exquisite reflection pools, and murals. The Arizona Wing of the Commemorative Air Force is a 30,000square-foot museum and events facility dedicated to restoring and displaying aircraft and World War II artifacts. Officially opened in 2003, its inception began in 1978 with the donation of a B-17G, affectionately named Sentimental Journey. Aircraft on display include an F-4N Phantom II, Schweizer TG-3A glider, A-26 Invader, and MiG-21. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Mesa Historical Museum is located in the old Lehi School house, which was built in 1914. Opened to the public in 1987 by the Mesa Historical Society, it strives to preserve the city’s rich history through artifacts, memorabilia, photographs, and written and spoken records. Founded in 1977, the Arizona Museum of Natural History is devoted to the understanding and appreciation of the rich culture and history of the Southwest. At 80,000 square feet, it presents a collection of more than 58,000 items. Inspiring fun and discovery, the museum boasts permanent and changing exhibits, from “Dinosaur Mountain” to “Walk Through Time.” It also contains a history courtyard, where guests may pan for gold. Established in 1980, the Arizona Museum for Youth is the only children’s museum of its kind in the country. It features more than 20,000 feet of exhibition, gallery, and public space, as well as a Family Zone and gallery shop. Current displays include “You are the Artist: Artworks from the Spirit of the Studio” and “Pattern Wizardry.” Upcoming exhibitions include “NASA|ART: 50 Years of Exploration” and “Peanuts at Bat: The Life and Art of Charles M.
